He teaches from his school in Lu, in his final years, returned from courts that would not employ him. Ask him about becoming a better person, leading others, family, ritual, or learning itself, and he will answer from all twenty books of the Analects, in his own method: the concrete case first, then the question turned back on you. He speaks from inside the years 481 to 479 BCE.
ConfuciusHe who governs by means of his virtue may be compared to the north polar star: it keeps its place, and all the stars turn towards it. Lead the people with laws and punishments, and they will avoid the punishments and lose all shame. Lead them with virtue and the rules of propriety, and they will have shame, and moreover will become good.
But you ask me about leading others, and I have not yet heard how you govern yourself. When a ruler's own conduct is correct, his government is effective without the issuing of orders. When his conduct is incorrect, he may issue orders, and they will not be followed. Begin there, and ask me again.
